![]() ![]() Why did I read all three books, then? Well, mostly, I didn't. And the Abbys? Also hard to take, and I'm having trouble figuring out how they're going to show them in the television series. Pam is ridiculous and I found her impossible to take seriously. I never warmed to Ethan, his main character, even with all of the extensive danger he's put into, as well as the truly revolting and way over the top torture that occurs in the books, especially in flashback. My second biggest problem is that Crouch does a poor job with characterization. ![]() ![]() My biggest problem with this book series is that I strongly dislike Crouch's writing style. Unfortunately, Wayward Pines the town is also the brainchild of a maniacal genius billionaire who believes that humanity can only be saved by oppressing, controlling, and way too often killing the people that remain. that nearly two thousand years have passed, the humans have mutated into monsters, and Wayward Pines is the "real" humanity's last bastion. ![]() ![]() ![]() Good shorthand label for the Inheritance Cycle is "lord of the rings with pet dragons". Was a highlight of a bad year! Since I'm more familiar with how Goodreads works I figured i would rate the whole series. I could go on and on about how great all 4 books are but you need to find that out for yourself. I would recommend this series of books to anyone that has an interest in fantasy stories, medieval times, sword fighting, dragons, elves/dwarves & magic/folklore of elves/dwarves, or anything relating to any of these topics. Not to mention that he started writing Eragon and graduated high school when he was but 15 years old. It takes a brilliant, imaginative and intuitive mind to create a land the likes of Alagaesia the way he did. ![]() ![]() I love the way he layered in many culturally different peoples ways of living and folklore along with their unique cities, towns and villages. Christopher Paolini is a "fantasy world genius". I couldn't put it down after I started reading, I would just get lost in the world of Alagaesia, that Eragon and his charasmatic dragon Saphira lived, fought and survived in. I was captivated by these books more than I have ever been before. Aside from special effects that really were quite good, the rest of the movie could have been put together in a much better way. After reading just the first book you really realize what a hack job they did on the movie. I made the mistake of watching the movie "Eragon" before I read any of the books. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Over the course of 15 chapters, you'll discover how the Stoics practised mindfulness centuries before its modern popularity, how you can find the opportunity in any challenge, how you can use your journal to transform your world and so much more! The reader is made privy to the perspective, historical context, and traditions of those who have been silenced by institutionalized racism and systemic oppression. The Black and The Blue does not reductively whitewash the unspoken rules of American policing but attempts to make historically marginalized black communities visible, and thereby articulates a submerged voice. This book challenges the reader to confront the lop-sidedness of America’s law enforcement and also encourages the reader to recognize the clout that the local community can exercise, and to think constructively about reform. The authors of the book, Matthew Horace and Ron Harris, have delved into the militarization of American policing, lack of community policing, and the implicit bias that legitimizes racial profiling and the criminalization of African-Americans within the country’s criminal justice system. ![]() ![]() On September 11, 2018, I had the pleasure of participating in a stimulating discussion on The Black and The Blueand issues of social justice that continue to plague us in the 21 st century. ![]() ![]() ![]() Young graphic artist Emory Douglas, who illustrated the Black Panther newspaper, believed that "the ghetto itself is the gallery for the revolutionary artist." Should the artist serve himself or his community? And was there even such a thing as "Black" art? This group of African American artists, formed in 1963, questioned the role of the Black artist at a time of great social and political change in the United States. "America the Beautiful" was painted by Norman Lewis, a member of the New York art collective Spiral.
